floods in burkina faso

November 15, 2009

Burkina Faso on Africa’s west coast has experienced devastating floods in September with over 150,000 people homeless. In stark contrast, I recently attended a benefit concert organized by Amadou Kienou, a beautiful man and wonderful drummer from Burkina.

It was wonderful to see so many people that night and I expect a good sum was raised for flood relief. The dancing got started with Baro Dundunba who played a couple of beautifully melodic rhythms from Cuba and Haiti and of course Kon and Bada. Many strong people indeed. Amadou turned the heat up even higher with some incredible jembe and tama solos. It was fire time.
