Back in the summer and the fall (it feels like forever ago), we had the pleasure of seeing a baby Cardinal raised by its parents in our garden. At first we noticed a sparrow-looking bird hanging with some Cardinals and thought that was pretty odd. As summer turned into fall, the sparrow started turning red and belligerent, and we realized that our pair of Cardinals had a baby. Cardoof would whack his mother with his tail until she flew up to the bird-feeder and brought him some food. We thought that it was an accident, but we saw him do this several times over a few days until she got sick of him. And yes, he could fly; he just didn’t want to.
