vatican and anti-semitism

April 2, 2010

The Vatican has stated that the criticism of the Roman Catholic Church over paedophilia scandals is similar to anti-Semitism. This is a very interesting analogy; it is somewhat like saying that what the Jews faced was similar to what the Nazis faced – in reality they both faced hatred and death, but something tells me that leaving out the context may be misleading.

In addition, for the Vatican to use the analogy of anti-Semitism is rather hypocritical – anyone remember Pope Pius XII and his silence during the height of Nazism? Or the pre-Vatican II official stance on Jews? In my opinion, the word ‘anti-Semitism’ is thrown around inappropriately a little too often especially when one wants to quickly quiet any criticism.
